The Putnam County Public Library will hold a "Maker" Egg Tempera Painting Workshop on Weds, Nov 5th, from 6 -8 pm by DePauw Assistant Professor of Art, John Berry.

The workshop is for high school age through adult and is limited to 14 participants. Prior painting experience is helpful but not required, and all supplies are provided at no charge. Registration is required. Please visit or call the Circulation desk at 765-653-2755 x 100.

For more than a thousand years until roughly 1500 AD, egg tempera was the predominant form of painting with roots dating back to the ancient Egyptians.  It is a labor-intensive and meditative process, using ground mineral pigments and egg yolk to create translucent layers of paint. Workshop participants will use traditional methods to create egg tempera paint and begin their own egg tempera painting. While this painting process predates the Renaissance, the images participants draw from will be taken from contemporary fashion culture.  The result will be a series of delicate paintings that combine the craftsmanship of a medieval painting workshop with contemporary notions of beauty and consumerism.

John Berry received his BFA at Rhode Island School of Design in 2004, and his MFA from Indiana University in 2009.  Since then, he has been teaching and painting and drawing at DePauw University, with a focus on abstract and Neo-expressionist painting.  He was a finalist for the Abbey Scholarship in Rome and was a 2014 full fellowship recipient at the Vermont Studio Center.  A solo exhibition of his work will be on view at the Peeler Art Center in March, 2015.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Closed Sundays and major holidays.
