Alliance of the Swope: Page and Palette Book Club

November 3
10am - noon

The first book scheduled for discussion this year is The Muralist by B. A. Shapiro.  America's contribution to modernism made celebrities of its creators, but, in the years leading up to World War II, few people were familiar with the new art movement, Abstract Expressionism, or the names of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and others who were painting in New York at the time.  Danielle Abrams, a young researcher at Christie's auction house, is the novel's moral center, and, through her, we watch Pollock, Rothko, and others struggling to develop their unique styles. The book is a tale of Hitler's rise to power and of one American's desperate attempt to rescue family members from Europe even as the United States was blocking visas to tens of thousands of refugees.  Occasional chapters feature Eleanor Roosevelt and her tireless but largely fruitless efforts to help Europe's Jews emigrate to the United States. If you are interested in discussing this tale of art and politics, please contact Eileen Prose, 812-234-6803.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Closed Sundays and major holidays.
